210 posters that actually say something!

I was published in this book last year, but wasn't aware of it until one of my ARGS students, Kevin Zweerink, pointed it out. All the posters take up a full page in the catalogue. Each artist statement is included with a picture of the designer. My copy came with a sticker stating "210 posters that actually say something." The statement made me smile and I hope the book makes you smile too. All of the work is incredibly impressive.

Monster Drawing Rally is a performance, a happening, a bonanza, a rollicking good time of art making, kid activities, food and drinks! The event will consist of 5 one-hour shifts with several artists working simultaneously per hour. Audiences will have the rare opportunity to watch art come to life and purchase complete works on paper for $65 each from more than 60 artists.

Strassen Kunst Opening This Month

STRASSENKUNST: an international exhibition of work inspired by graffiti.

I (Bizhan Khodabandeh) am one of 58 artists that have been selected by juror Martin McFadden, LRPS, Director and Curator, at 12 12 Gallery in Richmond, Virginia.

This international exhibition will feature works from across the US, Canada, Taiwan, Thailand, Israel, and Hungary.

Opens at artspace on Friday, August 27th.

Curated by Patrick Godfrey (velocitycomics.com), Thea Duskin (ghostprint.com), and Spencer Hansen (loose-limbs.com), this show will feature the show posters, handbills, and flyers of Richmond Virginia’s recent and past events. It’ll open at Ghostprint Gallery on Friday, August 6th. The walls and temporarily installed telephone poles of the gallery will be plastered with ephemera used to promote Richmond’s music,
bands, and events with a showcase of select show posters and other artwork for sale.

According to the dictionary, entropy is defined as the loss of information in a transmitted message. Apply this definition to the contemporary music scene, and you have the motivation behind Entropy Ensemble.

Entropy Ensemble noticed this deterioration, and now strive to take today’s music back to its classical form—pre-lyrics, unnecessary instruments, and other overpowering noise.

To a sold out Sotille Theatre in April of 2009, Entropy Ensemble performed select Radiohead songs, including “There There” and “Paranoid Android”. The altered songs—the melody, harmony, and texture are exposed in a classical light—are part of the Radiohead Project, an attempt to strip down the popular band’s stylings in a hybrid chamber music setting.

Andrew Walker, the brains behind the Radiohead Project, is the ensemble’s pianist and principal arranger. Fellow arranger Julia Harlow, cellist Lonnie Root, violinist Javier Orman, bassist Ben Wells, flutist Kim Alford, and drummer Stuart White all join Walker in Entropy Ensemble’s quest to strip mainstream music.

Live Painting at Saturday Stroll!

Every third Saturday, during Saturday Stroll, artists, Jesse Smith and Bizhan Khodabandeh paint live outdoors on the 200 block of W. Broad Street. Guest artists are regularly invited to paint along side Smith and Khodabandeh. This is a chance for art goers to witness both the process and the final product. The final 4' by 4' wood panel pieces are available for sale at reasonable prices.

Jesse Smith is an internationally recognized tattoo artist and illustrator, currently tattooing at Ghostprint Gallery. Jesse has received numerous awards for his Tattoo work and has also been featured in many national, and international, publications. He was recently included in a book called  "Tattoo Prodigies" which included 83 of the most innovative tattoo artists to date.

Bizhan Khodabandeh is a local graphic designer and design instructor for both higher and K-12 education. He has received numerous international and national awards for his design work, including: placing in Adbusters’ One Flag Competition, selected for Good 50x70’s poster project and recognition for his “I Dream of a Richmond ...” Campaign by the American institute for Graphic Arts’ via the International Cross-Cultural Design Awards.

Saturday Stroll is a daytime initiative created by downtown Richmond businesses to encourage local shopping, dining and public festivities in Midtown Richmond. Saturday Stroll takes place on the 3rd Saturday of every month from 11AM - 4PM. This even is free and open to the public.
