I made a poster fro this exhibition is the culmination of a class taught by Tom Dehaven and
Kelly Alder titled, Collaborating on Comics. The class sought writers
from VCU’s English Dept and Artists from VCU’s Comm Arts Dept to
collaborate on comics together. The event exhibits the results.

"Both
the Frable and smallspace galleries will feature "Art-Mageddon: When
Pictures and Words Collide, Comics collaborations by VCU artists and
writers." This exhibition was created through a joint effort of VCU
Communication Arts and VCU English Department Writing Students enrolled
in the new class called "Collaborating on Comics" taught by Kelly Alder
and Tom De Haven. Students created original comics between 10 and 14
pages in an artistic partnership. De Haven remarked on this process "The
writers concocted the captions and dialog—but not entirely. The artists
designed the characters and determined the graphic style—but not
exclusively. In good comics, words and images are inseparable, they
blend and they bond, become a single thing, a compound. It’s a kind of
magic, but it’s also a kind of pharmacology…"
